This is the place where clockwork thrives, where ingenuity and creativity push the world toward greater heights. Scholars and mathematicians from all four continents congregate here, hoping to add their own inventions to the clockwork city.

Ruling Factions

The Capital, Chevaliére

Chevaliére is a technological marvel, a city run entirely on clockwork. At the center of the city sit three large clock towers, each holding an important cog in the ruling of the city. In the centermost tower is the meeting place for the Order of the Sundial, Chevaliére’s ruling council. This group of individuals has full control of the clockwork of the city, monitoring new technological advancements and making sure the Time Waves stay in order. The right tower holds the Clockwork Confederation. This group is a task force dedicated to keeping the peace in the city, and detaining those who would disturb the Sundial’s design. Members of the Clockwork Confederation are typically automatons, though higher up officials are humans. The final, leftmost tower is home to the Custodian of Centuries, a person whose being has long since been lost to legend. She holds reign over the Timekeepers, a specialized group of scholars and inventors who keep the city functioning smoothly. The city is also home to Aeternitas, the most prestigious university in the world. The next generation of Timekeepers is trained here, and the application process is highly selective. Only the best and the brightest are admitted here, and only the best of those are selected to be Timekeepers.

Religion

There are two primary religions in Chevaliere. The first is based around the Timekeepers, and the Custodian of Centuries. They believe that the Custodian is. Essentially a Jesus/Kelsier-type figure? and revere her because she has the strongest connection to the Time Waves. The Timekeepers themselves are mostly secular internally, but the mystery of the Custodian of Centuries and the powers granted to them by her has lent them a mystical element for the general populace. (I enjoy the dichotomy between science and religion, and think that the idea that science IS religion to followers of the Custodian is really fun.)

The second religion (the Wavefinders) skips over the Custodian entirely, acknowledging that she is connected to the Waves in some form but not accepting her as a higher religious figure. To them, she is Just Some Guy. Their god is Time itself, shaping the way things go for eternity. There’s a theme of predestiny as one of their tenets, because Time is eternal and infinite and shaped/molded a certain way.

Recreation

Though Chevaliere is a city of science, great appreciation is placed on the arts. The theatre district is booming, and artisans are often found lining the streets selling their wares. Once a year there is an inventor’s exhibition, where students at the university can show off their new ideas and seasoned inventors can pitch their creations. Parties and festivals are often thrown in the streets, though the upper classes tend to frown upon it. Likewise, the upper classes often throw elaborate banquets and masquerades, showing off their wealth and influence.
