Order of the Sundial

There are twelve members of the Order of the Sundial, one for each hour on the clock. The council is headed by High Noon/Midnight, their second in command being Quarter-Past. The two other high ranking members are Half-Past and Quarter-To, with the rest of the council being named after the hours themselves. (One O'clock, Two O'clock, etc.) These designations are titles, not names, but when entering the position Council members are expected to essentially lose their names to time.

The council is made up of members of the twelve great noble houses. New council members are trained from a very young age, preparing them for succession as time catches up to the present members. It is expected that the eldest child of the house will become the new council member, and any other children will attend to other matters. Council members are appointed for life, but they may choose to step down at any time at their discretion. This is, however, typically frowned upon.

Council members are sworn into membership through a special ceremony, usually administered by their house’s Timekeeper. This ceremony ties their life to the Time Waves, opening them up to better see the threads of time that power the city, but at the same time lessening their own time on this plane of existence. (What are the logistics of this? I’ll figure that out as i go i think. I don't think the timekeepers have any mystical powers- i think the custodian of centuries does though maybe she channels through the timekeeper in question administering the ceremony. The 12 Noble Houses

The Twelve Noble Houses, besides being members of the Order of the Sundial, each manage a dukedom and control an important aspect of the continent’s governance.

High Noon/Midnight

The title of High Noon/Midnight is held by the House of Archimedes. Highest and most grand of the noble houses, this dukedom is responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of clockwork gears on the continent. As gears are essential to the work of Timekeepers and other inventors alike, as well as a major currency, this house is held in very high esteem.

One O’Clock

The House of Arsénault holds the title of One O' Clock. One of the lesser houses, this dukedom works under Guardémont. They are responsible for the manufacturing of the Clockwork Confederation Automatons, and work with the Confederation to ensure their upkeep.

Two O’Clock

The House of Benedicté, Of the Two O' Clock position, used to be a smaller one, but has risen in power in recent times with the rise of the church. Their head of house spearheaded the rise of the followers of the Custodian, and is working hard to try to make this the official religion of the capital (to the dismay of other Council members.)

Quarter-Past

The House of Guardémont is the second-most powerful of the noble houses. As Quarter-Past, this dukedom has command over the police force. In doing so, they also have power over a few of the lesser dukedoms. The Guardémonts are in charge of the law in Chevaliere and the surrounding dukedoms, a task that they take incredibly seriously.

Four O’Clock

Four O' Clock's dukedom, The House of Margaux, holds responsibility over the continent’s banks. As a lesser house, their work is overseen by the House of Archimedes.

Five O’Clock

This dukedom is smaller, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in wisdom. The House of Courcillion runs Chevaliére’s information network. This manifests in two ways- the courier system, used to send messages, and the Order of the Sundial’s spy network.

Half Past

One of the four major houses, the House of Deveréaux controls the waterways and therefore the flow of commerce and shipping throughout the continent. Courcillion tends to work closely with them with the courier system, in order for information to travel faster.

Seven O’Clock

Seven O' Clock's dukedom, the House of Alauriér, has mastery over the Revels in Chevaliére. They are responsible for organizing events among both the wealthy and the general populace, and make sure that entertainment is well funded.

Eight O’Clock

The House of Rousséau is responsible for the distribution of food throughout Orthosia, managing imports from Pherusa and the continent's own internal crops.

Quarter-To

The House of Vidal of Quarter-To is in charge of the hospitals and medical practices in Orthosia. The best hospital in the world is in their dukedom, and people come from all over to receive medical care from their doctors.

Ten O’Clock

The House of Pierrépont also works with the house of Guardemont, building and sustaining the prison system. The main prison of Orthosia is called Akalbier, and is on an island at the bottom of the continent.

Eleven O’Clock

Eleven O' Clock, the House of Valérian, founded Aeternitas, the school where all Timekeepers are trained. They focus highly on education and are in charge of managing the school system across the continent.
